The Land and the Centre for Rural & Remote Mental Health have partnered to get more people talking about mental health, with an online forum on suicide prevention.

There is ongoing concern about mental health and suicide in rural and remote NSW. In every state in Australia, the rate of suicide among those who live outside the greater capital cities is higher than that for residents that live within them, and the rate has risen much higher in rural areas over the period 2011-2015.

To mark World Suicide Prevention Day on the 10th September and R U OK? Day on the 14th September the online forum will focus on rural suicide prevention. Our expert panel are ready to answer your questions about a number of important issues, including:

  • preventing suicide and providing support in tough times
  • how to tell if someone is thinking about suicide and what to do about it
  • how to have a difficult conversation
  • how to reduce stigma associated with mental illness, and
  • understanding what it is like to be bereaved by suicide.

The forum will be held at 12 noon. To access it, go to www.theland.com.au, and follow the links.
