Restoring woodland health by returning lost mammals to Mulligans Flat Sanctuary

 Guest speaker: Dr Nicki Munro

The first meeting of Sutton Landcare for 2015 will be held at Sutton school on Tuesday evening the 10th of February commencing at 7.30pm.

At 8.00 pm our guest speaker, Dr Nicki Munro, will address us on restoring woodland health through the reintroduction of previously lost mammals such as the Eastern bettong.

Eastern Bettongs (a very small member of the kangaroo family) were reintroduced to Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary to see if they could reinstate some of the processes that have been lost from our woodlands.  They do this by digging.  And digging!!  Nicki will explain some new research at Mulligans Flat on the digging behaviour of bettongs, and why digging is so important to the health of woodlands.

 Nicki Munro is an ecologist at the ANU, with a background in restoration ecology (chiefly looking at the value of revegetation on farms as habitat for fauna).  She was previously involved in reintroducing bilbies, burrowing bettongs, greater stick-nest rats and western barred bandicoots in central Australia, at an amazing reserve called Arid Recovery, upon which the Mulligans Sanctuary is based.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for us to extend our knowledge of the important work being undertaken at Mulligan’s Flat to help restore the natural environment in which we live .
