Review of weed management in NSW

The NSW Government is undertaking a major review of weed management in NSW. There is now an opportunity for ALL groups involved in or affected by weed management to contribute.

As an initial step in the review, an issues paper has been drafted  by the Natural Resources Commission based on initial consultation and research. The purpose of this paper is to:

1. clarify priority issues
2. get stakeholder and community views about barriers and opportunities for more effective weed management
3. seek to identify any additional issues, and 4) identify relevant evidence to inform the review. 

This paper is now open for public comment.

At this stage in the review, there has been limited interaction or input from community weed managers, and given the importance of the massive community contribution to controlling weeds, it is important that the issues affecting the community be included in the review.

One of the key issues emerging is how to effectively balance investment in control of new and emerging weeds (such as orange hawkweed) with strategic management of widespread weeds (such as bitou bush) to reduce their impacts, especially on biodiversity. Section 4.1 of the issues paper entitled “Community Ownership” and the associated questions may also be of interest.
