Ecology behind the actions in the Greater Goorooyarroo Strategy
Primary tabs
Venue: Sutton School.
At 8.00pm our guest speaker, Dr Sue McIntyre, will explain to us the ecology behind the actions contained in the conservation and rehabilitation Strategy for the Greater Goorooyarroo area, which straddles the northern border of the ACT and surrounding NSW. This area of about 30,500 ha, includes nationally significant Box –Gum woodland remnants.
The presentation will illustrate why particular actions were selected for inclusion in the Strategy and some suggestions regarding their implementation. Four actions will be discussed covering understory restoration, timber management, grazing and watercourses.
Dr McIntyre, was formerly a Senior Research Scientist at CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems and is currently a Fellow at the Fenner School at ANU and at CSIRO. She has published extensively on the management of native vegetation in production landscapes, and has contributed to our thinking on landscape design, land use thresholds and the effects of disturbance, including grazing on vegetation. She has researched grassland and woodland management in Europe and Australia, ranging from the tropics to the temperate zones.
The meeting provides an opportunity for us to learn from an expert in native vegetation management in farming landscapes on the important developments underway in the Goorooyarroo region and their ecological underpinnings.
All interested persons are welcome to attend. Further details may be obtained from Tony Redman, Landcare secretary ph 62303266.
