World Wetlands Day is celebrated internationally each year on 2 February. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971.
The international theme for World Wetlands Day 2013 is Wetlands take care of water. Wetlands provide important hydrological functions such as groundwater recharge, water quality improvement and flood alleviation. The health of wetlands depends on the quality and quantity of water that reaches them. To secure their conservation and wise use it is essential that they are managed in the wider context of catchment-scale water resource management.

If you'd simply like to visit a local wetland and enjoy the sights, sound and scents of nature, visit your local Visitors Centre and ask for information about the local wetlands - you might be surprised by how many towns have them!.
You might also like to visit Fivebough & Tuckerbil Wetlands at Leeton - the Murrumbidgee region's own Ramsar-listed Wetland of International Importance.

SAFETY TIP
If you're going to be out in the bush or wandering 'round a wetland in summer always have: sturdy, enclosed shoes, protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, drinking water, sunscreen, a first aid kit and a fully charged phone or emergency tracking device. If the bushfire danger is high, keep away.
