Date:
31 May 2012 - 5:00pm

NSW Department of Primary Industries together with the Murrumbidgee Catchment Management Authority are running two one-day workshops - Soil Biology and Managing Land for Carbon. Numbers for both workshops are limited. If you are interested in attending, please register your interest by contacting the Murrumbidgee CMA Yass office by Thursday 31st May 2012, on 61 186 013, melinda.johnson@cma.nsw.gov.au or sari.glover@cma.nsw.gov.au.

Managing Land for Carbon

The Managing Land for Carbon workshop will assist landholders to increase potential for carbon sequestration on their property. It will provide participants with basic soil carbon knowledge, and the skills required to competently develop a farm management plan for carbon.

The workshop aims to:

  • Provide the knowledge and skills required to develop a farm management plan for carbon

  • Increase participants' understanding of soil carbon and provide them with the skills to develop a map as part of an overall management plan

  • Increase carbon sequestration on the participant's properties.

Soil Biology

This workshop is designed to provide participants with an introduction to the contribution of soil organisms to soil health, land management strategies to maintain and increase soil biological health and some methods to monitor changes in the activities of soil organisms. Participants may then apply this knowledge in their field of work, be it local government, agricultural production, environmental management or education.

This workshop provides participants with an opportunity to understand:

  • How soil organisms contribute to soil health and how to measure their activities

  • Land management practices that increase soil organic matter/soil organic carbon content which are also described as the underlying processes to maintain and increase soil biological health.

  • Practical aspects of monitoring soil organisms focused on farm based measurements.
