Resources

A wide range of resources have been developed through the Cross Property Planning project, covering many of the workshop topics and other areas of interest to land holders. Links to these resources are provided below.

Native vegetation on farms:

• Critical threats to native vegetation: A snapshot of some of the critical threats to native vegetation, and possible changes to agricultural management to help avoid them

• The value of paddock trees: The importance of paddock trees in our landscape, and what land holder's can do to help protect them

• Champions of change - Farmers and their paddock trees: A video produced by Matt Herring and Nathan Smith, featuring 3 landholders from the Cross Property project talking about the value of their paddock trees

• Monitoring our landscapes: How and why to monitor changes in our landscapes

• Creating a healthy farm dam: A 'how to" guide for converting a typical farm dam to a healthy, biodiverse farm dam, including suggested plantings for the various zones within and around the dam

• The role of fungi: A description of the many roles which fungi play, and how land holder's can adjust their management practices to help protect and conserve fungi on their properties.
   
• Checking for Change:  A practical guide to checking whether sites newly managed for conservation are on track to improve.

Revegetation:

• Preparing and planting a revegetation site: An explanation of the steps involved in planting a revegetation site, from ground preparation and weed control through to planting tips and follow-up care

• Planting a native shelterbelt: An outline of the role and benefits of native shelterbelts, and the various aspects which should be considered in the design process

• Propagating native species: Some tips to get started in native plant propagation, from seed collection through to germination and planting out

• Cost of tree guard options: Indicative prices of various tree guard options, including individual tree guards, groves and tree lines. A useful guide to help work out what will be the most cost-effective option when planning your revegetation works

• Monitoring photopoints: A description of how to set up a photopoint site, to take repeated photo's over time as a way of monitoring changes to your site.

Preparing for bushfires:

• Bushfire survival checklist: A handy one-page checklist with key actions to undertake before, during and after a bushfire emergency. Edit our basic checklist to produce your own, ready to stick on the fridge or some other prominent location!

• Bushfire resources: Links to a range of useful resources, recommended by the NSW Rural Fire Service, to help you prepare for a bushfire

• Gardening in bushfire areas: A summary of some key design and management options to consider for gardens in bushfire areas. A selection of local plants which are generally thought to be more suitable in bushfire areas is also included

• Neighbourhood safer places: Neighbourhood Safer Places are a place of last resort during a bushfire emergency, however it is important to know where your local Safer Place is prior to a bushfire. This list details the locations of Neighbourhood Safer Places in the Junee, Kyeamba and Humula regions.

Wildlife on farms:

• Conserving reptiles: A description of the importance of reptiles in Box Gum Grassy Woodlands, and the elements of the landscape which are of most importance to their survival

• Frogs on farms: A summary of some of the frogs commonly found on properties in our region, their importance and key habitat requirements

• Swift parrots: A desscription of these important but threatened birds, including how to identify them and how to help conserve them

• Nest boxes: A guide to the use of nest boxes, the role they play, designs for their construction and installation, and details of recommended monitoring and maintenance

• Remote wildlife cameras: Remote cameras are a useful way of surveying animals which are typically hard to spot, and have the added advantage of minimal interference with the animal. This guide explains how to use the cameras, which are available for loan free of charge through the Cross Property project.

Books:

• Frogs: A glovebox guide: This guide, by threatened species expert Dr David Hunter, provides a comprehensive description of frogs of the Highlands, Tablelands and Slopes of southern and central NSW

• The flora of Wagga Wagga: A guide for revegetation and restoration: This book, by David Orchard, describes over 80 species of flora native to the area, with an emphasis on shrubs, forbs and grasses. Each page of the book focuses on a single species, and provides a general description along with advice on how to find and grow that species
