Spirit of Landcare 'Lost' - RN Bush Telegraph
One of the architects of Landcare says policy amnesia is killing the internationally acclaimed environmental scheme.
Radio National's 'Bush Telegraph' program on government funding cuts to Landcare interviewed Andrew Campbell, who played a major role in the design of the Landcare program. He is quoted as saying that Landcare's strength lies in its creation of social networks that have changed the mindset of landholders. Rather than just being an environmental program it has been a platform for social change; a way of bringing people together to tackle environmental problems in a cooperative way.
It is not often that this aspect of Landcare is publicly acknowledged although academic evaluations of Landcare that have argued strongly for ongoing government support have long recognised the social value of community based natural resource management.
