ACT Frogwatch

Frog species are widely recognised as indicators of environmental health and their presence can indicate good water quality and the availability of high quality habitat. The ACT and Region Frogwatch Program has two main aims:

To organise and maintain an annual community frog monitoring program – Frogwatch CENSUS. During the Census week in October when most frogs call and mate, more than 200 volunteers of all ages monitor frog calls at approximately 140 sites in the ACT and surrounding NSW region. Information gathered by Frogwatchers is compiled into an annual census report which is used by catchment groups, government and scientists to guide conservation efforts in the region. Volunteers are fundamental to the success of this annual census. No previous experience is required to become a Frogwatcher. Training on frogs, how to monitor them and ways to help protect them and their habitat is provided.
To deliver free school education programs to schools in the ACT and the wider region. Frogwatch provides information and resources for teachers and undertakes school visits to help students learn all about the fascinating world of frogs, not only within the ACT, but also from Yass to Cooma.
