3.1. Climate

The Mid Murrumbidgee features a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and cool winters. Average annual rainfall varies greatly across the region, from 450 mm at Narrandera to more than 1300 mm at the source of the Tumut River. Rainfall is relatively evenly distributed, with a slight winter-spring peak. Extreme storm activity is most common in summer and least common in winter. Mean annual rainfall in Wagga Wagga, the most populous urban centre in the Mid Murrumbidgee, is 574 mm (BOM, n.d.). The region is prone to occasional prolonged dry periods.
