2.1. Climate

The upper catchment is cool and relatively dry, although annual rainfall averages can exceed 1000 mm in some areas. Annual rainfall averages for the Upper Murrumbidgee fall between 500 and 700 mm. Canberra, for example, averages 629 mm per year, distributed relatively evenly over the year, with a peak in October and a trough in June.

The Upper Catchment tends, on the whole, to be cooler than the Mid and Lower Catchments. Canberra experiences an average of 99 frosts per year, 95 of which occur between April and October, and 58 of which occur in winter. Frosts can occur between March and November.
