i) Fire management
As already discussed in this section, unmanaged pasture and bushland can create a potential fire hazard which must be addressed. On properties without livestock, strategies other than grazing such as reducing fuel loads by chemical and mechanical means will need to be considered.
Protection of life and property is the overriding priority in fire management, particularly as urban areas expand and rural residential developments bring more people into fireprone areas.
Keeping property safe from fires is the responsibility of every landholder so seriously consider joining the local bushfire brigade.
Obtain a Bushfire Survival Plan from the NSW Rural Fire Service and remember that all new subdivisions in NSW require a Fire Management Plan. Talk to the Rural Fire Service (through your local bushfire brigade) before you build a house and create a fuel-free zone around any buildings.
Further details on fire risk and preparedness can be found in the section ‘Whole Property Planning’ on page XX.
