Enhancing Biodiversity On Farms - Adelong
Primary tabs
Nest Boxes and Mistletoe
Nest boxes are a simple form of providing artificial hollows to native birds and mammals. As tree hollows can take more than 100 years to form, nest boxes can protect native birds and mammals while natural hollows and habitat are established through Landcare type activities. There can, however, be issues for successful uptake.
Mistletoe, on the other hand, is often considered the likely cause of dieback, especially in paddock trees. Despite being ten times more abundant since white settlement, ecologists are now finding that mistletoe plays a central role in maintaining ecosystems.
To help understand some of these challenges, Mason Crane, research ecologist with the Australian National University (ANU) will be our guest speaker for this dinner. Mason will explain some of the latest findings regarding mistletoe and nest boxes in increasing biodiversity in our landscape.
The event will also be an opportunity to collect your own nest box/es. With help from the Adelong and Tumut Mens' Sheds, and funding from Snowy Valleys Council, Riverina Highlands Landcare Network is able to offer free nest boxes for use in past Landcare plantings or areas of existing native vegetation.
