Beneficial insects & biological control of pests
Primary tabs
Pest outbreaks are often a sign of ecological imbalances. Insecticides have in the past been part of the solution but they are also part of the problem. Broad spectrum insecticides kill the good with the bad and can also result in building resistance in those pest we want to get rid of. Increasing biodiversity is a more effective, integrated solution. Did you know that 99% of insects are not pests? And that these insects can be natural enemies to pests? Beneficial insects provide ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling and pollination.
This workshop will consider beneficial insects and biological control of pests. To fully realise the benefits of beneficials, you need to know the biology and role that common species play interacting with pest species across the landscape ecosystems. Learn to identify common beneficials, or signs of their activity.
