Adventure learning down the Murrumbidgee
Primary tabs
To whom it may concern,
I have recently developed a small educational organisation - IntrepED Learning Journeys. As a trained Geography teacher, my aim with IntrepED is to bring the real world into the classroom by undertaking journeys to content-rich and curriculum-relevant locations on behalf of teachers and learners. Each journey will address a specific unit from the Australian Geography curriculum. My experiences and discoveries will then be broadcast to classrooms via a range of media. These resources will provide teachers with an engaging and contemporary alternative to textbooks. But most importantly, they will give students an authentic and relevant taste of the numerous environmental, economic, and social issues present beyond the classroom.
In the coming weeks I will be undertaking my pilot journey, travelling by kayak down a section of the Murrumbidgee River. Along the river I will be water testing, photographing and videoing as much as I can! This journey will address the year 7 Geography unit: Water in the World. Some of the issues addressed in this unit include:
- the forms water takes as a resource
- the variability of Australia's water resources
- the management of water as a resource
- the nature of water scarcity in Australia.
However, what I will be focussing mostly on will be:
- The ways that flows of water connect places as it moves through the environment
- Investigating the environmental, economic and social effects of water as it connects places
To do this I am aiming to shoot a series of short video conversations with people along the way. I simply want to meet people from a range of backgrounds and interests who all have a connection to the river in some way.
I must stress that these will not be formal, structured interviews. I just need people to talk freely about aspects of the river that they are passionate about in a very relaxed manner!
A rough idea of where I will be is as follows:
- Canberra: 6th-7th July
- Jugiong: 8th - 9th July
- Gundagai: 10th-11th July
- Wanatabadgery: 12-13th July
- Wagga Wagga: 14th - 16th July
I hope this gives you a good sense of what I'm trying to achieve and I would be so very appreciative if you were happy to help out and make a time to catch up whilst I'm in the area - I am more than to travel anywhere nearby as I'll have access to a support vehicle.
I understand the dates aren't too far away, but please contact me (mobile or email) if you'd be willing to spare 20-30mins.
