The next meeting of Sutton Landcare will be held at Sutton School on Tuesday August 13 at 7.30 pm. At 8.00 pm, our guest speaker, Dr Dennis Blight, will address us on the above topic.
Dennis is currently the Chief Executive of the Crawford Fund, a non -profit non-government organization dedicated to raising awareness of the benefits to developing countries and to Australia of international agricultural research.
His association with international agricultural research began in earnest some 25 years ago. Prior to working for the Crawford Fund, he was Director-General of CAB International, an intergovernmental body in research, training and publishing in the life sciences, and Chief Executive with lDP Education Australia, the international development program of Australian universities and colleges.
His presentation will consider the potential for landcare research and development as an element of Australia’s food security aid program taking into account the experience of landcare, some examples of support for landcare training by the Crawford Fund, and some broad considerations of how Australia might best help contribute to global food security. How does and should assistance in landcare for food security compare to other forms of aid in food security?
Important issues that will be considered to address this question are: whether or not Australia's experience in landcare is transferable to a developing country environment; and whether global landcare models can survive in the longer term without direct or indirect government subsidy or support through aid programs.
The meeting provides an opportunity for participants to contribute to our speaker’s thinking on these matters.
All interested persons are invited to attend.
