New Native Plant Garden at Murrumbateman
Story via the Yass Area Network of Ladcare Groups enews.
Murrumbateman Landcare, in consultation with Murrumbateman Lions, has recently established a colourful new native plant garden in Jones Park to showcase our beautiful local native wildflowers and help make Jones Park an even more attractive park for locals and visitors. The garden is dedicated to the memory of Jenny Langridge - a well loved member of the Murrumbateman community.
“Jenny’s Garden” measures over 80 sq m and you will find it located next to the parking area on the easterly facing slope overlooking the pond of water surrounded by more native plants, also just recently planted, with the help of the Murrumbateman Scout Group as part of their Landcare badge. It has plenty of shade and plants selected to suit this site with Australian natives that are frost and drought hardy and is bordered with a mass planting of small herbaceous flowers such as lilies and daisies often found in our local box gum woodlands including grasses, low groundcovers and small flowering shrubs that attract birds and bees. Most are local to the regional area which are now quite rare and are eminently suited to planting in the home garden.
Although the signage is not yet in place you will find it also has a welcoming comfortable bench that will be dedicated with a plaque to Jenny who was a much loved member of the local community and Landcare who sadly passed away in 2013 at the age of 49 after her battle with breast cancer. When the final signage is established you will also find it provides detailed information on our box gum woodland wildflowers and plants but if you are keen to know what’s flowering just contact us at Landcare (mlg_pres@yan.org.au) if you would like to find out more about the plants and their names.
The garden took two days to build and Murrumbateman Landcare would like to sincerely thank Rod Johnson from Dirty Dingo landscaping for donating an all his time, effort, machinery and skills to getting it established. We would also like to thank Rob Price for his ongoing work in helping watering and maintaining the garden. Many thanks also to everyone who donated their time and funding including Murrumbateman Progress Association, the South East Local Land Services and Jenny’s friends and family.
So if you are a keen gardener or are looking for great ideas on how to beautify your garden with colourful, drought hardy local native wildflowers have a look and get some inspiring ideas for your block – and planting with local plants will help benefit the local wildlife too!
