2.3. Landforms
The region is surrounded by major ranges and features several internal ranges. Altitude reaches 1600 metres at the headwaters and drops to 340 metres at Burrinjuck Dam. Several peaks exceed 1600 metres. 29% of the area is classified as mountainous and only 3% as flat. Topography between the ranges is generally rolling to undulating.
The Murrumbidgee initially flows south-east from its source, before turning north near Cooma and passing through the ACT. Major tributaries include the Numeralla, Bredbo, Queanbeyan, Cotter, Molonglo, Yass, and Goodradigbee Rivers.
