13.5 Agisting livestock
During times of low feed, either during drought or the annual feed gap, livestock producers on small landholdings may want to send their livestock away on agistment, to give their pastures a chance to recover and avoid costly hand-feeding. Agistment may also be a way of ‘finishing’ livestock if the pasture quality and quantity is better than what is on offer at the home block, and the stock can be sold straight from the agistment property.
Conversely, landholders may want to take on agistment livestock at certain times of year, especially if the property has suitable infrastructure and this option fits well with a horticultural operation for example, as a weed control strategy.
