iii) Pests and domestic livestock
Pest and nuisance animals are more likely to be a problem on properties with livestock due to their capacity to seriously maim and kill domestic animals.
The basic control options for pest and nuisance animals on a livestock block are outlined in the general management section. These should be undertaken with advice and supervision from your local LHPA ranger. Again consider the possible negative impacts of the various control methods such as baiting on local fauna and domestic pets.
Livestock producers also have some alternative options for reducing the likelihood of pest animals attacking their herds and flocks. While they may not kill the pest animal, herd protectors such as Maremma dogs and alpacas have been used very successfully to protect lambing sheep and free-range chickens in particular.
