7.3.1. Interpreting soil tests

Laboratories express soil test results differently, and some are easier to understand than others.
For most small landholders, the most important results to be looking for are soil pH, conductivity (salt levels) and to a lesser extent, cation exchange capacity, calcium/magnesium ratio, phosphorus and nitrogen levels. Soil carbon levels and a description of other soil properties can also be useful.
A NSW DPI publication containing information to help you understand the most significant results is available at http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/agriculture/resources/soils/testing/interpret . However it is important that you back up this broad interpretation with advice from your local NSW DPI horticulturist or agronomist.
